We had another free day out at a National Trust in November. It was by signing up to ‘In Your Area’ app. We decided to use it for Tattershall Castle, one of the National Trusts in Lincolnshire. We met some family there and took a picnic despite it not being very warm. There were picnic tables with a good view of the castle and moat and we ate before we went in. There was no cafe but there was a small shop.

The Castle was impressive. We started at the bottom floor where there were some stained glass windows and they had a video playing to watch about the restoration of the fireplaces. Going upstairs they had some fun Halloween bits out for the kids, some hats to dress up in and a spell to make. They always have some fun things for children to do at National Trust properties. In other areas of the castle they had a noughts and crosses game and in another, clothes to dress up in.

There were some interesting rooms to look around in the castle with information to read. When we got to the top there was a great view to look at. After this, we went to the basement and then onto the Collegiate Church of the Holy Trinity, which was only a few minutes walk away. This was a lovely church and home to seven species and thousands of bats. We didn’t see any but the kids found this interesting! Read more here.

This was a good half-day out. We enjoyed looking around and it kept the kids entertained too. There’s no cafe so you need to bring a picnic if going over lunch or buy something from the shop (the website says it sells sandwiches). They are closed over winter until mid-February. A family ticket here would normally currently cost £27.50. If you are looking for a full day out, you could combine with a visit to nearby Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre, although this is only open Easter until the end of October. We’ve not been yet, but it’s on the list!
