Lincoln Castle

We had some friends visiting from the South and chose Lincoln Castle as a meeting place for their way up, and thought all the children (from 3 to 16) would enjoy it, as well as the adults! It’s somewhere we’ve been wanting to visit since we moved to Lincolnshire so it was great to finally get the chance. It cost £40.50 for a family ticket. For this, we were able to do the medieval wall walk, look around the Lincoln Castle Victorian Prison, and see the Magna Carta. We started by walking the walls. It was a great view of Lincoln from there and of Lincoln Cathedral.

This took us a while, and then we headed to the Victorian Prison. You could explore the women’s prison and the men’s prison. They had a number of knowledgeable staff or volunteers who were dressed up and keen to talk to visitors about what life was like in the prison and the history of the prison. Some rooms (cells!) were set up with activities for the kids to do such as crafts and puzzles. There was also a cell in which you could dress up in Victorian clothing. A typical prison cell was displayed.

Finally, we went to see the Magna Carta (no pictures of this are allowed), which is one of the four remaining copies. We then finished with a drink in the beer garden of a nearby pub in the centre of Lincoln before heading home. This was a good experience and I’m glad we were able to visit. In the future, we’d love to attend an open air cinema here. They also do other events such as dog friendly days, a Steampunk festival and a food and drink event.
